Rules

  1. 5,000 word limit on entries.
  2. No previously published material, or material accepted for publication elsewhere, either in print or online.
  3. No simultaneous submissions.
  4. Do not identify yourself on the entry. Include a separate cover sheet with name, address, phone number / email, and title(s).
  5. Multiple entries are allowed; however, each entry must be accompanied by its own $34.95 entry fee.
  6. If already subscribed to EVENT, you will receive a one-year extension.
  7. Entries will not be returned.
  8. If entrants wish feedback and commentary on manuscripts, please check out our Reading Service for Writers. 
  9. Preliminary judging is done by the Editor and editorial assistants at EVENT.
  10. Douglas College students, employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.
  11. Douglas College students may enter two years after completing courses.
  12. Entries must be postmarked or submitted online by April 15.
  13. Contest results are posted on our website and through social media in August. The winning entries and judge’s essay are published in the December issue of EVENT.

Following on from the hugely successful Eason Spelling Bee, which has seen over 1000 primary schools take part in our national spelling competition, we are delighted to launch a new creative writing competition aimed at secondary school students.

The competition is open to all 2nd level students in the Republic of Ireland, with entrants divided into two groups:

Junior cycle – 1st Year to Junior Cert
Senior cycle – Transition Year to Leaving Cert

Entrants can write on any subject matter with an agreed maximum word count of 1000 for Junior cycle entrants and 2000 words for Senior cycle.

A shortlist of all entrants will be finalised by a panel of book experts in January with the best stories being published online on easonedition.com and put forward for a public vote. Our panel of book experts will judge this shortlist and their scoring combined with the public vote will determine one overall winner each for Junior cycle and Senior cycle. The winning and shortlisted stories will then be published by Kobo as an e-Book.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. PROMOTER’S NAME AND ADDRESS

2. START DATE

Entries for this Competition will be accepted from 12.00 am on Wednesday, 1 October 2014.

3. CLOSING DATE

The closing date for entries in this Competition will be midnight on Friday, 9 January 2015.


4. HOW TO PARTICIPATE

4.1 In order to enter this Competition, each participating secondary school must go to www.easons.com/easoncreates, enter the information requested in order to register and upload each of their nominated Junior cycle student’s and Senior cycle student’s short story online. An entry will only be accepted once submitted online and no other means of entry will be considered valid.

4.2 The Competition is open to all 2nd level students in the Republic of Ireland with entrants divided into two groups:

4.2.1 Junior cycle – 1st to Junior Cert (ROI);
and
4.2.2 Senior cycle – Transition to Leaving Cert (ROI).

4.3 Students can write on any subject matter with an agreed maximum word count of 1,000 for Junior cycle entrants and 2,000 words for Senior cycle entrants.

4.4 All entries must include the school name, school address and school telephone number together with the nominated student’s name and group (i.e. junior or senior cycle).

4.5 Entries which are incomplete or incomprehensible are void and will not be entered into this Competition.

4.6 Each secondary school can submit multiple entries from their class to this Competition in respect of the Junior cycle students and multiple entries from their class to this Competition in respect of the Senior cycle students. However, only one entry per student is permitted. Entries over the maximum number of entries will be void and will not be entered into this Competition.

4.7 The Promoter accepts no responsibility for completed entries lost in transit. Completed entries will not be returned.

5. PRIZES

5.1 The Prizes are as follows:
Junior Cycle Competition:
• First prize will receive €1,500 worth of books for their school

5.3 The winners are responsible for all applicable taxes and expenses not specified in description of the prizes above.

5.4 No cash alternative will be offered in lieu of any prize awarded.

5.5 The allocation of the secondary school prizes will be to individual secondary schools only.

5.6 The Promoter reserves the right to alter the specifications of the prize should that specified be unavailable for reasons beyond their control. Any alternative prize will be of equal value.


6. SELECTION OF THE WINNERS

6.1 One winner will be selected from the Junior cycle and one winner will be selected from the Senior cycle.

6.2 The entrants will be shortlisted initially and all shortlisted stories will be selected by a panel of book experts.

6.3 Once shortlisted, participating pupils in the shortlist must return a release form with their guardian’s signature prior to the shortlisted entries being put up for a public vote on www.easons.com and/or Facebook.

6.4 The overall winners for the Junior cycle and Senior cycle out of all entries correctly submitted in accordance with these terms and conditions will be selected by the scores from the panel of book experts (50%) combined with a public vote on www.easons.com and/or Facebook (50%).

6.5 Each participating secondary school and student acknowledges and agrees that they may be required to be used in publicity if they are selected as a winner. Entrants accept that, if they win, the Promoter will have the right, without additional payment or permission, to use their name, age, town of residence and likeness for the purposes of announcing the winners of this competition and for related promotional purposes.
7. NOTIFICATION OF THE RESULTS AND RECEIPT OF THE PRIZES

7.1 Shortlisted finalists will be contacted no later than Wednesday, 14 January 2015.

7.2 The public voting on the shortlist will take place between Monday, 19 January and Saturday, 31 January 2015.

7.3 The Promoter will notify the winners by telephone on or before 6th February 2015 and the winners will receive their respective prizes in a reasonable time thereafter.
8. DATA PROTECTION

The entrants personal data will only be held for the purpose of selecting the winner and will not be used for any other purposes whatsoever without their prior permission. Any personal data relating to entrants will be used solely in accordance with current data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the individual’s and parents prior written consent.
9. RESTRICTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Please note the following restrictions and requirements apply to this Competition:

9.1 The Competition is open to secondary schools in Ireland only. Pupils who enter the Competition on behalf of their secondary school must be a pupil in either 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Transition, 5th, 6th Year in ROI in that secondary school during the 2014/2015 school year.

9.2 Employees of the Promoter, the immediate family of employees of the Promoter, employees of any of its associated companies, employees of any agencies connected with this Competition and the owners and employees of participating Promoter outlets/premises will not be eligible to enter (or otherwise participate in) this Competition. For these purposes an ‘immediate family member’ includes a child, step child, grandchild, brother, step brother, sister or step sister.
10. GENERAL

10.1 No purchase necessary.

10.2 Entry into this Competition shall be deemed to be a full and unconditional acceptance of these terms and conditions. The Promoter reserves the right to amend, suspend or terminate these terms and conditions, the Eason Creates rules and the Competition at any time without prior notice.

10.3 The name of the winners will be published at www.easons.com/easoncreates.

10.4 Once you have submitted an entry, you acknowledge that all of the copyright, privacy, publicity and all other rights in and to the entry will be owned by the Promoter. Entrants hereby assign to the Promoter all worldwide copyright and like rights in their entries and waive all moral rights. The Promoter will be publishing the winning entries online and by Kobo as an e-book.

10.5 These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Ireland and any disputes shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Irish Courts.

10.6 Neither the Promoter nor its agents will have any liability or responsibility for any claim arising in connection with participation in the Competition or any of the prizes awarded.

The Creative Writing Contest #73 is one of its kind. This competition allows participants to benefit from their social network and puts every viewer in the judge’s chair by allowing them to vote for their favorite entry.
Sign up and post your creative writings on www.tallenge.com. It gets seen by a global web audience and will compete against other best-matched opponents in a head-to-head format. Each visitor will have an option to view and vote for your entry.

Is there a participation fee? No. You do not have to pay any money, or buy anything, to participate in any competition on Tallenge.

Who can participate? This is a global creative writing competition. There are no geographic limitations or restrictions on participants. Anyone can participate as long as they are of legal age.

What format is accepted?  For Text files:
