“Established in 2001, The New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award is a $10,000 prize awarded each spring to a writer age 35 or younger for a novel or a collection of short stories. Each year, five young fiction writers are selected as finalists by a reading committee of Young Lions members, writers, editors, and librarians. “Any writer who has not previously published a volume of prose fiction is eligible to enter the competition. Previously entered manuscripts that have been revised may be resubmitted. Writers are still eligible if they have published a volume of poetry or any work in a language other than English or if they have self-published a work in a small print run. Writers are still eligible if they are living abroad or are non-US citizens writing in English. Current University of Iowa students are not eligible. The manuscript must be a collection of short stories in English of at least 150 word-processed, double-spaced pages. We do not accept e-mail submissions. The manuscript may include a cover page, contents page, etc., but these are not required. The author’s name can be on every page but this is not required. Stories previously published in periodicals are eligible for inclusion.” NB: “Award-winning manuscripts will be published by the University of Iowa Press under the Press’s standard contract.”

“The Award for Excellence in Journalism recognizes professional reporting of outstanding merit that contributes in an exceptional way to the public understanding of psychoanalytic and psychological principles and phenomena. The $500 award is broadly conceived. Nominated work need not be specifically about psychoanalysis or psychotherapy per se. And, nominated work may critique or question psychoanalysis as long as it advances understanding of human relationships and/or the life of the mind. The Award is juried by a panel of professional journalists as well as by psychoanalysts.”

Each entry must be between 300 and 700 words and be formatted in Times New Roman, font size 12 with double line spacing. On the first page of your entry, include your name, email, phone number and country of residence.

Writing Contest 2015 – Call for Entries

Writing Contest 2015 – The 2015 Writers-Editors Network (WEN) Writing Competition Call for Entries is online at the WEN website (, giving all serious writers, book authors, and poets the opportunity to have their best work judged and compared to their peers.

The WEN Writing Competition recognizes excellence and promise in the written word, from nonfiction articles and book chapters (previously published and unpublished/self-published) to fiction (unpublished and self-published short stories and novel chapters) to children’s literature to poetry.

To enter the 32nd Annual Writers-Editors International Writing Competition, go to for the guidelines. You can download an entry form and submit via email, using PayPal to send in your entry fee. Or, you can print out the handy entry form and mail in your entry, entry form and entry fee.

The deadline for entries to be postmarked is March 15 each year; however, because March 15 falls on a Sunday this year, entries postmarked on March 16, 2015 will be accepted. Entries may also be submitted online 24 hours a day, seven days a week at

To celebrate the 2014 Writing & Self-Publishing Open Day, Kobo Writing Life and SilverWood Books are delighted to announce an exciting new writing competition.

The Open Day Writing Competition is geared towards original, unpublished or self-published, fictional, English language manuscripts. The manuscript submitted must be the entrant’s own work, and the entrant must own the copyright to all work in its entirety.

One Winner and one Runner Up will be selected by a dedicated review panel on the basis of the combined strength of the synopsis and the single chapter submitted.

The First Prize will be a SilverWood-produced ebook published with KWL plus a paperback edition sponsored by Berforts Information Press, published and distributed by SilverWood Books (info here).

The Runner Up will receive a new Kobo Aura H2O as prize.

Entrants are to submit a single page synopsis (no longer than 500 words) of the plot of the book they would like to publish along with first chapter (no longer than 5,000 words). Entries must be submitted as a single Word document containing synopsis and first chapter with page 1 being the title page containing the entrant’s full contact details, title of work and author name.
